Geology

Pleistocene fluvial deposits have a significant distribution in Serbia, especially in the riparian area of the Danube and Sava in the southern part of the Pannonian basin. In this region these sediments are almost universally overlain by younger Pleistocene or Holocene deposits, and their thickness varies from 10 to 40 meters. Deposits of similar characteristics, that could be correlated to the synchronous ones in southern Srem, form high terraces of the Danube valley system. Morphologically, these terraces are of erosional-accumulation character. Some pre-Quaternary deposits of different composition and age are situated beneath the Pleistocene fluvial deposits. Significant height differences among these deposits in the part of southern Srem connected to the high terraces of the Danube are the consequence of differential tectonic movements which were expressed in subsidence of the Panonnian basin, and in stagnation or uplifting in the river valleys.

The Natural History Museum in Belgrade possesses an extensive collection of Carboniferous fossil plants originating from the area of Vrška Čuka. The decision to show the collection came as a result of a number of specimens, the well-preserved fossil material, and the fact that in Serbia there are very few localities with carboniferous flora.

The beginning of the research was impeded by the facts that material was never recorded in the Museum’s inventory books, that there were no data about the chronology of the collection, and that the number of samples and their locations were not known. After several years of research, however, all the required data were obtained and the collection was finally completed and inventoried.

The genera of Cordaites, Pecopteris and Asterotheca prevail in the paleoflora of Vrška Čuka, but different seed ferns also appear in large numbers. There are also a few arborescent lycopsids and horsetails. Although the paleoflora originates from three localities that are close to each other, clear differences can be noted in the floristic composition, as well as the presence of certain taxa, particularly between the paleofloras of the streams Uzunov Potok and Surdžijski Potok.

During several botanical expeditions in the Republic of Serbia (Mts Šar-Planina and Mts Homoljske Planine), two species of the genus Viola (V. sect. Viola) were found as new for the flora of Serbia: Viola chelmea Boiss. & Heldr. in Mt. Ošljak and V. jooi Janka in Mt. Vukan. The last taxon represents a new species also for the flora of the Balkan Peninsula. The taxonomic positions, phytogeographic importance and conservation statuses of the two new plants is discussed within the scope of their newly established distribution patterns both in the Carpathians and the Balkan Peninsula.

Genus Armeria Willd. (Plumbaginaceae) in Serbia based on two herbarium collections in Belgrade

This paper shows distribution of species of the genus Armeria Willd. in Serbia, based on analysis of the herbarium specimens from the collections of Natural History Museum in Belgrade (BEO) and of Institute of Botany and Botanical Garden “Jevremovac”, University of Belgrade (BEOU). A total of 181 herbarium specimens were analyzed, of which 84 are deposited in the collection of BEO and 97 in the collection of BEOU. In Serbia there are three species of this genus: A. alpina (DC.) Willd., A. canescens (Host.) Boiss. and A. rumelica Boiss. Although A. maritima (Mill.) Willd. (= Statice armeria L., = A. vulgaris Willd.) was listed in the edition “Flora of SR Serbia”, this species is not present in the territory of Serbia.

Conservation status of some rare boreo-montane species in Serbia

Abstract. Due to disjunct distribution and habitat specificity, boreo-montane species are particularly vulnerable to the declining in area and population size. Although great proportion of these species has been already included, certain number of rare species among them so far has not been protected by any national or international document. This paper reviews the distribution and conservation status of 13 rare boreo-montane taxa not covered by any act of protection yet. For each species, the IUCN threatened status in Serbia is given; on the basis of these estimates it is proposed for 10 of them to be included in further acts of protection.

Distribution and communities of Suaeda pannonica in Serbia

In this article are presented data referring to the distribution and phytocoenology of Suaeda pannonica in Serbia. Between the years 2009 and 2013 we confirmed this species on four localities from the total of about 10 its known sites. It was found on the banks and bottoms of salt lakes Medura, Slano Kopovo, Rusanda and Okanj in Bačka and Banat. We also recorded 25 phytosociological relevés with S. pannonica. Besides community Suaedetum pannonicae the species occurs in other associations within the class Thero-Suaedetea, alliance Salicornion prostratae: Salicornietum prostratae, Crypsido-Suaedetum maritimae and in a separate cluster, i. e. combination of species Suaeda pannonicaChenopodium chenopodioides which syntaxonomical character is unresolved. In comparison with previously published data, recent situation indicates gradual vegetation changes and habitat loss at all remaining localities of S. pannonica in Serbia.
