Geology

In this edition we continue to publish biographies of those important persons from the Museum’s rich historiography who contributed the most to the establishment of the Museum and its initial collections. Academician Jovan Žujović holds a special place in the constellation of meritorious Serbian scientists: his great knowledge, experience, broad education and driving energy strongly influenced the foundation of the Natural History Museum. He personally participated in the creation of the Museum first collections and remained a loyal friend and advisor to the Museum until the end of his life.

Material on the annotated checklist of vascular flora of Serbia. Nomenclatural, taxonomic and floristic notes IV

This paper represents the fourth part of the inventory of the flora of Serbia (Niketić et al. 2018, 2020, 2021), which contains nomenclatural, taxonomic and floristic notes related to taxa from the Magnoliopsida group. At the same time, this contribution is the basis for publication of subsequent volumes of the An annotated checklist of vascular flora of Serbia in order to supplement the data on vascular plants in our country.

Genus Euphorbia L. (Euphorbiaceae juss.) in Serbia based on herbarium data from the collections BEO and BEOU

This paper contains information on specimens of the genus Euphorbia L. collected in Serbia and deposited in the Herbarium of the Natural History Museum in Belgrade (BEO) and in the Herbarium of the University of Belgrade (BEOU). A total of 2199 herbarium sheets were examined, of which 915 are deposited in BEO and 1284 in BEOU. The catalogue with herbarium data on 37 taxa of the genus Euphorbia distributed in Serbia is presented as well as distribution maps for all recorded taxa.

Distribution of Perillus bioculatus (Fabricius, 1775) in Serbia

While the hemipteran species Perillus bioculatus (Fabricius, 1775) was introduced to Serbia a while ago, the number of records has been rapidly increasing in recent years. This paper presents new records of P. bioculatus on ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) in association with Ophraella communa LeSage, 1986 (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), which is a prey species for P. bioculatus.

Distribution of tree frogs (Hyla spp.) in Serbia – implications of the recent taxonomic revision

We present the updated distribution data of the Hyla arborea species complex in Serbia. Hyla arborea inhabits all biogeographic regions, while Hyla orientalis inhabits only the easternmost parts of north-eastern, eastern and south-eastern Serbia. Potential hybrid zone encompasses parts of central and southern Serbia from the Đerdap gorge, over Niš to Bosilegrad. Since the taxonomic separation between the tree frog taxa was not yet recognized in national nomenclature, we propose the official Serbian names. The species H. arborea will keep the standard Serbian name “Gatalinka”, while for the species H. orientalis we propose the name “Istočna gatalinka”.

An updated checklist of the Serbian batracho- and herpetofauna

In this paper, the updated checklist of Serbian amphibians and reptiles is presented. The updated checklist of Serbian amphibians and reptiles was compiled from the literature on distribution, taxonomy and phylogeny. The checklist contains 48 autochthonous and two introduced species. Five species underwent taxonomic revisions (Triturus ivanbureschi, T. macedonicus, Pelobates balcanicus, Bufotes viridis and Mediodactylus kotschyi). Two species were added after recent taxonomic splits of species’ complexes (Hyla orientalis and Anguis colchica). Presence of new (Lacerta trilineata) and introduced species (Hemidactylus turcicus) was confirmed during recent fieldwork. There are at least eight more species that can potentially be present in Serbia. The national protection legislative should be updated according to the current checklist.

Contribution to knowledge of batracho- and herpetofauna of southern and south-eastern Serbia

We present the updated distribution of batracho- and herpetofauna in southern and south-eastern Serbia, based on literature and new field records for 16 amphibian and 22 reptile species. In these two biogeographic regions, already recognized as biodiversity hotspots, we discovered two new amphibian species with limited distribution: Hyla orientalis and Pelobates balcanicus. Also, one species (Triturus ivanbureshi) has restricted distribution, while one (Bombina bombina) is rare. Four reptile species have limited distributions and six are rare in these regions. The presence of hybrid zones and the influence of the Mediterranean climate make southern and south-eastern Serbia areas of great importance and the target for future ecological and conservation studies in Serbia.
